Nov 6, 2009, colorful abstract art

I have spent a fair amount of time browsing abstract art galleries, be it on the web or the more traditional kind. I can’t say the work every appealed to me, mainly due to my ignorance of the subject and what was being attempted by the artists in question. On the upside colorful abstract art always drew me in because I guess I’m a colourist at heart and this gave me a foot hold into developing a new relationship with abstract modern art. So last week I found myself with my own completed piece of modern abstract art. Of course I named it - Abstract number 1

Oct 8, 2009, Life drawing class

Last night I resumed life drawing class. I didn’t think during the summer that I would make it back this autumn as my son was born in September, so things are pretty hectic time wise. But last night, found me once again, back in fairly familiar surroundings, grappling with the same questions I always find myself with in front of the life drawing models, basically ‘why am I here?’ and ‘what do I want to get out of this?’. Even occasionally I try to answer these questions, the most common answer I come up with is ‘to be a better painter’. But sometimes, perhaps even most times I wonder aloud to myself if I am actually becoming that better artist/painter?, and how will I know or quantify such an achievement. It’s the doubts that bring me back, and so I come back with my charcoal and vast array of pencils and attendant sharpners and erasers

Sep 27, 2009, celtic mythology irish mythology

Since the advent of Riverdance, there has been an explosion of interest in all things Irish, from Irish culture and art, morphing into the worlds of Celtic mythology. Suddenly all things Celtic are cool and this is reflected in the art world, which always seems to be an astute barometer of where the money is. Irelands new found economic wealth was even paraded under the once noble heading of the ‘Celtic tiger’, which has seen become a parody of itself since the implosion of the domestic banking system. But we grin and smile on while the slow moving train of what is commonly known as art sales grinds to a painful stop somewhere deep in the wilderness between the civilizations of what is real and what we hoped was real
