May 12, Jimmy Kelly art, Jimmy Kelly paintings, Modern Irish art

This site is basically about me, Jimmy Kelly, and my art. My paintings. The thinking that goes into the process of creating them, and all the attendant concerns that flow both into that process and then out of that whole melting pot. More comes out than just the finished work. New thoughts and ideas and ways of looking at things. That is also what this site is about. Those thoughts and writings for you to read and think about and hopefully relate to.
Ill start with myself. Modern Irish artist? I dont know what that really means. All I know is that painting holds a very important place in my life, and that my work changes as much as I change, which is largely a good thing.

Nov 6, colorful abstract art

I have spent a fair amount of time browsing abstract art galleries, be it on the web or the more traditional kind. I cant say the work every appealed to me, mainly due to my ignorance of the subject and what was being attempted by the artists in question. On the upside colorful abstract art always drew me in because I guess Im a colourist at heart and this gave me a foot hold into developing a new relationship with abstract modern art. So last week I found myself with my own completed piece of modern abstract art. Of course I named it - Abstract number 1

Oct 8, Life drawing class

Last night I resumed life drawing class. I didnt think during the summer that I would make it back this autumn as my son was born in September, so things are pretty hectic time wise. But last night, found me once again, back in fairly familiar surroundings, grappling with the same questions I always find myself with in front of the life drawing models, basically why am I here? and what do I want to get out of this?. Even occasionally I try to answer these questions, the most common answer I come up with is to be a better painter. But sometimes, perhaps even most times I wonder aloud to myself if I am actually becoming that better artist/painter?, and how will I know or quantify such an achievement. Its the doubts that bring me back, and so I come back with my charcoal and vast array of pencils and attendant sharpners and erasers

Sep 27, celtic mythology irish mythology

Since the advent of Riverdance, there has been an explosion of interest in all things Irish, from Irish culture and art, morphing into the worlds of Celtic mythology. Suddenly all things Celtic are cool and this is reflected in the art world, which always seems to be an astute barometer of where the money is. Irelands new found economic wealth was even paraded under the once noble heading of the Celtic tiger, which has seen become a parody of itself since the implosion of the domestic banking system. But we grin and smile on while the slow moving train of what is commonly known as art sales grinds to a painful stop somewhere deep in the wilderness between the civilizations of what is real and what we hoped was real

Art therapy and art therapy exercises are, like many alternative forms of remedying the human condition, growing in popularity. This growth in popularity mainly stems from an almost corresponding expansion in the common consciousness permitting a more inclusive holistic view of what it means to be human. We are more than the sum of our parts, and popping a tablet is not going to fix each problem in life. What we need is a way of getting in touch with our own inner wisdom and what the solution is for us, in this moment, to address the set of circumstances which are unique to us at this time in our lives

Aug 31, Human figure Art

Human figure art is one of the most demanding genres, precisely because we all have a working knowledge of what a human looks like. If it looks wrong, then it probably is wrong, because thats how we live our daily lives, by our first impressions. And this is never more the case than when we are looking at other people, be it in person or via a photograph or painting. So there is little or no room for error in figurative art. Therein lays the lure and the challenge of working on human figure paintings

We live in a world, where to be is equated with to do. What happens when what we were doing ceases? Do we cease to be ?. Evidently not. Yet we get very caught up in the doing that we tie all our self-worth in with the things we achieve, with our achievements. Its good to achieve, but its a flawed way of looking at reality if we tie our self-worth in with those achievements

I wasnt in great form this morning. Maybe I was tired? Who knows, just one of those days I guess. Movtivation at an all time low, the sky was grey, so grey the solar pannel street signs couldnt even blink. I dropped my daughter into the creche then drove into town. I had chores, letters to post, stamps to buy, petrol to purchase, important stuff. The post office at the top of the town was closed, forcing me to leave the car and walk down town to the one in the middle of the narrow streets

Aug 17, Andy Warhol Art

I was never a big fan of Andy Warhol art. I always found his work too plastic, which was really the point he was trying to make by producing the art which he did. Pop art sums it up perfectly. Popular art for public consummation, but with a good dose of irony, which makes us all stand back and laugh at ourselves. The shared joke embedded in the art of Andy Warhol is one we all can appreciate. For this reason I think its part of the mass produced culture it was attempting to deride, which layers on another level of post-modern irony, and so on until its neither interesting nor ironic anymore.

One theory, but then again there are so many philosophies of beauty who can say what is truly beautiful. Alberto Giacometti tried, and maybe I like him for his trying in such and unusual and severe manner. Perhaps its the cocktail of creativity and intelligence, a rare enough combination
